Misti Nicole Harper presented her work “‘She Was Haughty’: The Failure of Respectability Politics for Middle-Class Black Womanhood at Little Rock Central High School” at the 84th Annual Meeting of the Southern Historical Association in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 9, 2018. Harper’s panel, “Little Rock Central High: The Hidden Costs,” centered black womanhood in the 1957 crisis, as well as the struggles of moderate politicians in the fracas and the political diversity among civil rights activists. “‘She Was Haughty’” represents a portion of Harper’s forthcoming book And They Entered as Ladies: When Race, Class, and Black Femininity Intersected at Little Rock Central High School.
