Marcia Bunge was invited by Queen’s University (Ontario, Canada) to serve as a theological adviser for an interdisciplinary project devoted to child protection. As part of the project, she met at Queen’s on October 19-21 with a team of 25 social scientists, public health researchers, Indigenous leaders, church leaders, and religious scholars to craft a joint public statement on child protection. The statement responds to the legacy of damage caused to Indigenous peoples by residential schools in Canada and calls for the repeal of Canadian laws that permit the physical punishment of children. Bunge was also invited to give a plenary lecture along with the Reverend Mark MacDonald, the Anglican Indigenous Bishop of Canada, on child protection. The public event was entitled “The Road to Reconciliation and the Protection of Children: Engaging with Theologies that Honor the Dignity of Children” and held at Queen’s University on October 20, 2017.
