Tom Huber, Nathan Huber ’17, and Matthew Huber (Rhodes College) are co-authors on the paper “Optical imaging of propagating Mach cones in water using refracto-vibrometry” in the March 2017 issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. They developed a method for obtaining videos showing the formation and propagation of Mach cones in water formed when acoustic waves pass through a metal cylinder. Fish and marine mammals can be harmed by the Mach cones in water formed by pile driving during bridge construction. This project demonstrates the ability to study these in a controlled, laboratory setting. This research program is supported by a grant Tom recently received from the National Science Foundation.
