The recipient of the Edgar M. Carlson Award for 1984 is Dr. Luke M. Reinsma, Department of English.

Luke Reinsma received the B.A. degree in education at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with majors in English and education, in 1970. In 1974, he earned the M.A. degree in English from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In 1978, at the University of Michigan, he received the Ph.D. with a major in English, and he has taught at Gustavus Adolphus College since that time.

His interest in the role of medieval rhetoric in the formation of early English literary style is evident in his many publications and presentations.

Students representing 12 different disciplines have paid Dr. Reinsma high compliments regarding his teaching. I shall at this time share a few of their comments:
“Dr. Reinsma is always available to students.” “He shows a personal interest in each student.” “He is always enthusiastic and well prepared.”
“Dr. Reinsma is indeed very demanding. However, he leaves each student with a very positive feeling for the work he has done.”
“Above all, Dr. Reinsma is trustworthy.”

Dr. Reinsma, it is my privilege to present to you the 1984 Edgar M. Carlson Award for distinguished teaching.
