The Provost’s Office is excited to extend a warm welcome to Espen Fredrick, joining the Physics department in Fall 2025!
What excites you most about joining Gustavus Adolphus College?
I am excited to be back in the place that inspired and uplifted me. As a former Gustie, I am grateful to give back to my community. I am also grateful for the opportunity to inspire the next generation of physicists.
Briefly describe your professional interests.
My research focuses on space physics and space weather, which describes the complex interactions between the Sun and the Earth. Space physics and space weather include the study of solar phenomena (like solar flares, coronal mass ejections, etc.) and the effects of these phenomena at Earth (such as the aurora or northern lights), including the hazards these effects pose to society.
What aspects of teaching do you find most rewarding?
The feeling of watching students take what they’ve learned and apply it to their unique perspective of the world is always rewarding.
What are you looking forward to exploring or engaging with in the Saint Peter community outside of your academic work?
I hope to connect and support small business owners and artists in the community. They bring a lot of charm and atmosphere to Saint Peter and are the heart of the thriving town community.
If you could have any superpower (related to your field or otherwise), what would it be and why?
Related to my field? Probably remembering all the equations…
