The Provost’s Office is excited to extend a warm welcome to Jenna Swenson-Shea, joining the Chemistry department in Fall 2025!
What excites you most about joining Gustavus Adolphus College?
I am excited to be joining Gustavus Adolphus College where people are so clearly dedicated to both teaching and scholarly work. I am really looking forward to being part of this collaborative and engaging community, and helping to guide the next group of students in their academic and scientific journeys!
Briefly describe your professional interests.
My professional interests lie at the intersection of environmental chemistry and chemical education. My research focuses on using analytical chemistry to track and monitor contaminants in natural waters in an effort to better protect our environment. I’m also deeply passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. I enjoy giving them hands-on research experience that not only enhances their understanding of chemistry but also helps them see the real-world impact of their work.
What aspects of teaching do you find most rewarding?
The most rewarding part of teaching for me is watching students grow, not just in their knowledge, but in their confidence. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see a student’s curiosity turn into a real passion for science, especially when they begin to find their own research interests and see the potential for their future careers.
What are you looking forward to exploring or engaging with in the Saint Peter community outside of your academic work?
I love being outdoors, so I can’t wait to explore all the natural areas and waterways around Saint Peter!
If you could have any superpower (related to your field or otherwise), what would it be and why?
If I could have any superpower, I would pick teleportation so I could go anywhere I wanted, whenever I wanted!
